Gamesley Cafe
Two of our church members Nick & Donna are running a Cafe in Gamesley, just outside Glossop.
Gamesley incorporates a municipal Council Estate of some 3,500 people, many of whom were translocated from East Manchester some 35 years ago. The setting is rural but the estate is geographically and socially isolated. There are about 1,300 houses, a parade of shops, three pubs, a health clinic, a youth and community centre, two primary schools, a preschool, a family centre, bowls club, two football clubs, a library and two churches. The area has the unfortunate distinction of being labeled the most deprived ward in the High Peak. 39.5% live on or below the Breadline. (Breadline Index), with significantly higher poor health indicators than the national average. e.g. 80% above average rates of early death from all causes. The Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2000 rank Gamesley at 661 from a total of 8,414 wards falling within the 10% most deprived wards in the country.(Data courtesy of High Peak CVS)
The Cafe provides (apart from food & drink!) a place where locals can go and receive a listening ear from Nick & Donna and the volunteers who run it.
As the Cafe now has to be self funding after its relaunch in 2006, there are often times when financial help is needed. Please contact us if you wish to make a contribution to the running costs, or volunteer to help
